Nov 23rd, 2009, 1:07pm

The Chicago 16 Inch Hall of Fame has just launched a facebook page!  Please join and suggest it to all your friends!

http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/pages/Chicago-16-Inch-Softball-Hall-of-Fam...

Some cool video clips on there and more pictures to come.

BTW...anyone have a picture of the Iowa All-Star team we played against b4 Nationals?  I need to put it on the facebook page!  I would like to get a copy of the Roster as well!

I never knew his last name, but I definitely remember Karl.   He was a fixture in the stands at all Iowa games after he moved to Des Moines

The last time I talked to Jay Pattee, he was tired of babysitting grown men, so he had begun coaching a women's softball team.   He is a councilman in the city of Perry, and he is trying to sell a screenplay he has written about how the death of John Lennon (among other things) has had a domino effect on world events.

Don Draper is quite a character.   For those of you who never knew him, he was recruited to Drake University to pole vault.   He made his money for college by shooting pool.   He decided that while he was there, he would like to play basketball too.  He ended up being a starting guard on Drake's Final Four team.  He went on to be one of the best 16" pitchers ever.  He led his Reame's Frozen Noodles team to Iowa's first top four finish at nationals.   Most of what I have learned about softball, I have learned through him.  He was also one of the best golfers in Des Moines.
Last time I heard from him, he and his wife Pam were planning to move to Arizona.

J.R. (John Reglein)'s Graphic Edge business keeps growing every year.  He keeps buying more and more space, and the business keeps filling it up.   He no longer sponsors big time softball, but he can usually be found at the major tournaments.

I am proud to say that I have played for all three of these men.

Possible that Draper's dad Everett is in a hall of fame in Kansas.  He taught and coached there.

The catcher with the face mask was the late Pete Spoden.

That would be David Christy.  He is the center of one of the biggest urban legends of Iowa 16" softball.   He lived in or around Carlisle.

The Tavern, broken bones, Bud Open, laying on the base path... I'll let Goose fill in the rest.

The Tavern team that Crow had played on for years and years, had never qualified for nationals.  (This was back in the day when it meant something to qualify for nationals.)   The Tavern team had just tied the game on what used to be diamond # 3 in Carroll at the state tournament.  It was the bottom of the seventh in the game that would send them to nationals if they won.   Crow dove (or slid) into second base as another baserunner reached third base with one out.    However, as Crow reached second, he had broken his collar bone.  The ambulance rushed on to the field to take Crow to the hospital.   For twenty minutes the medical staff tried to get Crow off of the field.   Crow would have none of it.  He demanded that they let him lie there, he said that he would sign anything that they wanted but his team had never qualified for nationals and he wasn't going to let this opportunity pass by.   He signed a waiver, the ambulance left the field, the next batter hit a sacrifice fly, the runner from third scored, Crow glowed with delight as he layed on top of second base.   The Tavern had just qualified for their first national tournament.   After the game, Crow went to the hospital for the needed medical treatment.

The muscle guy was Nellie, the guy named Woody.....hey Woody!  You still out there?  (He plays for Stover)  Crow's son was Todd Christy (TC) who played with my Graphic Edge team for a short while.  Don't forget Max, Jim Peters, Frankie Biagioli, Kemp.   The Tavern....a.k.a. "The Team from Hell!"
Chappy moved to Omaha, Hammer still plays a little bit for Carroll area teams and wears his Franks for the Memories shirt and cap quite often.
My brother played for the Taggers/Tampa Bay Tropics.  Those Holan boys are fun to hang with.

Frank was a good man.
Funny you should mention Jay Hatch.  I just finished sending him a copy of this thread, I figured he would enjoy it.  Yes, Jay is still teaching.  A few years ago, he and his wife were both named coach of the year in high school girl's basketball, Jay in Illinois, and Lori in Iowa.
Jay is the master of sports trivia.

I'm not sure, but I think the guy you are thinking of is Frank Biagioli.   He pithced quite a bit for the Tavern team, and he always squatted all the way down to the ground before almost every pitch.
He had a strange job for a softball guy, he was the head of Iowa's 1-800-BETS-OFF.

Where did Rod Erickson from the Tavern work? Was it for the state?  Some of the Tavern guys used to stay with Billy Blanchard and me when  they played in M town. It was just like a dorm!

Frank is a great guy. He sent me xmas cards for quite a few years.
